OXFORD, MS — October 3, 2007 — AnComm, the nation's first and only anonymous online and text based reporting and emergency notification service provider for schools, today announced that Spring Lake Park School District has selected AnComm's ‘Talk About It®’ to dramatically improve the flow and frequency of communications between school staff and students. The Spring Lake Park School District, with schools in Blaine, Spring Lake Park, and Fridley, is the first school system in the state of Minnesota to roll-out the innovative anonymous online communications service -- joining more than 120 schools across the nation already using AnComm's ‘Talk About It®’ as the centerpiece of their school safety strategies -- to bridge the communication gap between students and staff and to provide school administrators with an 'Early Warning System' to communicate with and counsel 'at-risk' students.
"AnComm's ‘Talk About It®’ anonymous online communication service gives us an innovative way of reaching out to our students in a form that is familiar and comfortable to them -- the Web," said Steven Price, School Safety Coordinator, Spring Lake Park School District. "It also correlates well with a new student leadership group that was developed this year at our middle school which is comprised of 65 student leaders. This task force of students will be a critical part in the monitoring of our school environment. The students will become the messengers. It is the hope that the students will assist in creating and maintaining a climate of respect and cultural acceptance."
"‘Talk About It®’ will provide an opportunity to reach more students so they can share their concerns in a non intrusive way. This is an avenue for all students to participate in creating a safe and welcoming learning environment which will help them concentrate more on their education," said Rebecca Crislip, Westwood Middle School Counselor.
"‘Talk About It®’ is an affordable and highly effective early warning system which aids in the prevention of violence and helps foster a safer, more comfortable learning environment," said Carter Myers, President of AnComm. "By putting the emphasis on improving communications between students and staff rather than capital infrastructure, schools using AnComm's ‘Talk About It®’ are seeing immediate results in improving their overall school culture. For the first time, students have the means to go online and connect with staff to seek help, guidance and resolution to their troubles."
"It is our goal to provide avenues for open and comfortable channels of communication in our building. We want the students to know that we care about what is happening in their lives and this is yet one more way to let them know we are invested in their academic, emotional and social success. This will provide yet another vehicle to report incidents of issues such as bullying, social issues, personal issues, violence and weapons," said Paula Hoff, Westwood Middle School Principal.
"We will continue to do all that we can to eliminate barriers to any student's success," said Dr. Don Helmstetter, Superintendent of Spring Lake Park School District. "We're confident that this will be another step in improving the learning environment within our district. AnComm's ‘Talk About It®’ anonymous communication service offers our students an innovative form to communicate that is familiar to them and gives each student every opportunity to get the assistance they need."
AnComm's ‘Talk About It®’ anonymous online and text based reporting service gives students a web-based portal to reach out and communicate various issues -- breaking the 'code of silence' through anonymous communication. Through their school's personalized ‘Talk About It®’ online reporting center, students can log in -- with their own confidential access code -- and select a topic from a pull-down menu to send an anonymous online message to a designated staff member anytime from any web-connected computer, PDA, wireless device or cell-phone. Once the message is sent, a staff member receives a real-time notification prompting them to log into ‘Talk About It®’ and retrieve the student's message and provide immediate help, guidance and counseling to the student. Because the online messages sent through AnComm's ‘Talk About It®’ service are sent anonymously, students feel more comfortable communicating with staff about problems and issues without fear of retribution or embarrassment.
‘Talk About It®’ will be made available for the 2007-2008 school year to more than 1,200 grade 5-8 students in Westwood Middle School and Westwood Intermediate School.
