OXFORD, MS — September 27, 2007 — AnComm, the nation's first and only anonymous online and text based reporting and emergency notification service for schools, today announced that the Powhatan County School District located outside Richmond, Virginia has selected AnComm's ‘Talk About It®’ anonymous online and text based reporting service to improve the frequency and flow of communications between faculty and students thereby reducing the likelihood of school violence.
The introduction of the new anonymous online and text based reporting service reflects the Powhatan County School District's dedication to providing students a quality education leveraging facilities, technology and Powhatan County's experienced educators.
"Communication is perhaps the most important component of school safety and the "Talk About It" program is a non-threatening way for students to share their concerns," said Randy Watts, Director of Pupil Personnel Services. "Today's generation is very comfortable using this technology."
Dr. Margaret S. Meara, Division Superintendent added that the program is an important component of the school division's efforts to provide a safe environment for children. She states, "That in addition to allowing student to share everyday concerns with school staff, the program also improves the safety of our schools since it provides a way to anonymously report an event or person that a student feels is suspicious. It opens the door to further investigation in an effort to defuse a potentially dangerous situation."
"For school administrators, ‘Talk About It®’ empowers faculty with an 'early warning system' so that they may proactively communicate, intervene and resolve school violence before it can occur," said Carter Myers, President of AnComm. "To date, 'Talk About it' has been integral in preventing hundreds of incidents of school violence, ranging from bullying, gangs, threats of violence and cheating to drug and alcohol abuse, pregnancy, depression, stress, physical abuse, self-mutilation, sexual harassment and date rape."
‘Talk About It®’ will be made available at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year to students in the following schools: Powhatan High School, Powhatan Junior High and Pocahontas Middle School.
Currently in use by more than 100 schools in 16 states across the United States, AnComm's ‘Talk About It®’ anonymous online and text based reporting service gives students a web-based portal to reach out and communicate their troubles, breaking the 'code of silence' through anonymous communication. Through Powhatan County Schools' personalized ‘Talk About It®’ online reporting center, students can log in - with their own confidential access code - and select a topic from a pull-down menu to send an anonymous online message to a designated faculty member anytime from any web-connected computer, PDA, wireless device or cell-phone. Once the message is sent, the faculty member receives a real-time notification prompting them to log into ‘Talk About It®’ and retrieve the student's message and provide immediate help, guidance and counseling to the student. Because the online messages sent through AnComm's ‘Talk About It®’ service are sent anonymously, students feel more comfortable communicating with school administrators, counselors and faculty about problems and issues without fear of retribution or embarrassment.
