OXFORD, MS — April 9, 2008 — AnComm, the nation’s first and only provider of anonymous online messaging and emergency notification for schools, today announced that Carter Myers, President of AnComm, will speak on “Reaching the i-Generation: Breaking the ‘Code of Silence’ Through Anonymous Communication” at the 52nd PSCA Conference scheduled for April 17-19, 2008 at the Lancaster Host Resort in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
In a session scheduled for Thursday, April 17, from 9:15 - 10:30 a.m. (EDT), Myers will address how the ‘code of silence’ ― a pervasive sense among adolescents that telling grownups another student is in pain or may pose a threat to others violates an unwritten, but powerful ‘code.’ This behavioral dynamic forces students to handle their pain and problems on their own, without the benefit of adult and professional counseling support. The ‘code of silence’ also has the potentially dangerous effect on students that they should not bring concerns about a peer’s behavior to the attention of school administrators, counselors, teachers and law enforcement officials.
During this presentation, Myers will examine how schools can dramatically reduce the likelihood of school violence by breaking this ‘code of silence’ ― without the massive capital investments in school infrastructure, such as metal detectors, security cameras and the hiring of additional security personnel, as proposed in many recently released school safety audits and plans.
Myers speaks frequently to schools, educational associations, and parent groups on the subject of school violence, including such various topics as the role of anonymous communication in making schools safer and how new technology can break the ‘code of silence’ and bridge the communication gap between faculty and students. He is also a Mississippi State Director of BullyPolice.Org, an advocacy group focused on the rights and needs of bullied children.
